BOSTON, Mass.- Supporters of the disability-rights community gathered June 11 at the Massachusetts State House to oppose efforts to legalize physician-assisted suicide in the Commonwealth. The peaceful demonstration was held alongside an advocacy day organized by supporters of assisted-suicide legislation.
Participants, many wearing purple at the request of Second Thoughts Massachusetts, voiced concerns that legalizing assisted suicide could place vulnerable individuals, including those with disabilities, at greater risk of coercion and abuse.
According to Patients’ Rights Action Fund, advocates gathered in Boston to defend the rights of people with disabilities and to reject the medicalization of suicide. In a statement shared following the event, the organization emphasized that “Suicide is NOT medical treatment.”
