ATTLEBORO, Mass.- A 19-year-old man was seriously injured Monday morning after the vehicle he was driving struck a utility pole in Attleboro, leaving him trapped inside the heavily damaged vehicle.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:35 a.m. near West Street and Berwick Road, according to the Attleboro Fire Department.
Firefighters found the vehicle with significant damage and its sole occupant trapped inside. Crews used multiple hydraulic cutting and rescue tools to extricate the driver.
While firefighters worked to free him, Attleboro Fire Department paramedics provided advanced medical care, including IV therapy and medications, inside and around the damaged vehicle.
It took approximately 38 minutes to safely extricate the driver. He was then transported by Attleboro Fire Department paramedics to Rhode Island Hospital with injuries believed to be life-threatening.
“This was a complex call that required our firefighters and paramedics to work simultaneously in a very confined and difficult environment,” District Chief Maitland said. “Our crews had to balance a difficult extrication with the need to provide immediate medical care. Everyone worked carefully and efficiently to free the patient as quickly as possible while minimizing the risk of further injury.”
Fire crews remained at the scene until approximately 9:40 a.m.
The scene was then turned over to the Attleboro Police Department, which is investigating the cause of the crash.
