EVERETT, Mass.- A 4-month-old baby who was choking and unable to breathe was saved by an Everett police officer who responded to a home on Broadway, according to the Everett Police Department.
The department reported the incident on August 20, 2026, saying Officer Fitzemeyer responded to 854 Broadway after the baby began choking while being fed. When he arrived, the baby’s father was holding the infant, who was blue and unresponsive.
Fitzemeyer took the baby and began first aid, using back blows to try to clear the blockage. The baby began crying, but soon stopped breathing again and became unresponsive.
The officer performed another round of back blows and was able to clear the blockage. The baby was then turned over to EMTs for further care when they arrived.
Patrol Commander Chris Hannon presented Fitzemeyer with a lifesaving medal on Wednesday morning in recognition of his actions.
Police Chief Paul Strong also commended Fitzemeyer, saying his actions saved the infant’s life.
According to Strong, Fitzemeyer joined the Everett Police Department from Lynnfield Police Department a couple of months ago.
