Police warn about bear sighting in the area

The Westborough Police department has warned on April 19th, 2019, about a confirmed bear sighting near Shrewsbury, specifically on Old Westboro Road in Grafton.

Black bears are becoming increasingly common in Massachusetts. The State Government is asking residents to learn how to avoid conflicts with these potentially dangerous animals that weight up to 600 pounds.

According to the State Government, the Massachusetts population of bears is estimated to be over 4,500 and is growing and expanding eastward. Black bears live and breed in Worcester County.

Keeping them wild is a win-win

Black bears tend to spend more time in residential areas when finding food there. The bears could end losing their fear of people, and then if a bear behaves in a way that is a threat to public safety, it may be euthanized.

The State Government recommends sharing the following guidelines with all neighbors to avoid conflict and keep bears (and other animals, such as coyotes) wild.

Bird feeders

If you live in an area with bears, it is best to avoid bird feeders altogether. MassWildlife suggests growing native plants, shrubs, and trees to attract birds.

Bees, chickens, crops, and livestock

Use electric fencing to keep bears out and protect your property.

Garbage, compost, and other attractants

• Store all garbage in closed containers in a garage or outbuilding. Do not leave your garbage barrels outside overnight.

• Clean greasy barbecues and grills after each use. Do not leave food scraps, grease containers or spilled grease in your yard.

Pet owners

• Don’t leave pet food outdoors
• Keep dogs leashed and never let dogs chase or interact with bears
• If you encounter a bear while with your dog, back away slowly and leave the area
