Photo courtesy of the Shrewsbury Fire DepartmentThe Shrewsbury Fire Department required the assistance of the Northborough and Westborough Fire Departments to kill a heavy house fire in Shrewsbury that left a family displaced.
On Saturday, November 23rd, at 1:16 p.m., Shrewsbury firefighters responded to 8 Phillips Court following a 911 call describing a kitchen fire, according to information submitted by the agency.
Upon arrival, the firemen observed heavy smoke and fire from one side of the building and started fighting the blaze. Firefighters inside the home determined that fire had extended into the kitchen ceiling and promptly extinguished the flames. Not only Northborough and Westborough firefighters but also off-duty crews helped in the response.
A Shrewsbury fire department’s preliminary investigation indicates the fire started on a stovetop, which was mistakenly left on, igniting a box that was on top of a burner. The homeowner reported that he was alerted to the fire by the smell of smoke inside the home.
Photo courtesy of the Shrewsbury Fire Department“The firefighters who responded today did a tremendous job working quickly and contain the fire, unfortunately, the fire spread quickly throughout the open floor plan of the home, causing extensive damage,” Fire Chief James Vuona said. “This is an unfortunate reminder of the importance of ensuring stovetops are off when they’re not in use, and that they’re not left unsupervised when that are in use.”
The only person at the house when the incident happened was able to escape safely and with no injuries. The Red Cross of Massachusetts and Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services are assisting the family of four displaced by the incident.
