NORTH READING, Mass.- A 21-year-old Paxton man faces a motor vehicle homicide charge after a fatal crash in North Reading Saturday night killed an Andover man and his 8-year-old daughter.
Matthew Sweeney also faces charges of operating under the influence and operating to endanger, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and North Reading Police Chief Mark Zimmerman.
The crash happened at about 10:45 p.m. on Route 28 when Sweeney was driving an Acura MDX at a high rate of speed and collided with a Honda HR-V stopped at a red light, according to the preliminary investigation.
The Honda became engulfed in flames. First responders and a Good Samaritan attempted to rescue the two occupants, but both died at the scene. The victims were later identified as an adult male resident of Andover and his 8-year-old daughter.
North Reading firefighters said they arrived to find both vehicles heavily damaged and the Honda on fire. Firefighters quickly put out the fire.
Sweeney was arrested and charged at the scene. He was assessed for injuries and remained in police custody. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Woburn District Court.
The investigation remains ongoing.
