ATHOL, Mass.- Wild animals displaying neurological symptoms have been reported in Athol, particularly in the downtown, Pinedale, and Pequoig areas, according to a public notice issued May 29, 2026.
North Quabbin Regional Animal Control issued the advisory after receiving reports of wildlife showing signs including falling over, stumbling, circling, lack of awareness of surroundings, and seizure-like behavior.
Residents who observe animals with these symptoms are asked to contact the Athol non-emergency police line at 978-249-3232. Officials said they are working with several state agencies to determine the cause of the reported illness.
Animal control urged residents to keep pets supervised outdoors and avoid leaving them unattended outside. The notice also recommends ensuring pets are current on rabies and distemper vaccinations.
Officials did not identify a confirmed cause for the symptoms and did not indicate any confirmed risk to the public. The investigation remains ongoing in coordination with state partners.
