Rare two-headed baby turtle found on Cape Cod

BARNSTABLE, Mass.- A rare two-headed baby turtle was found at a protected nesting site in Wellfleet and brought to the Cape Wildlife Center on September 17 for monitoring.

The 5.2-gram diamondback terrapin, a type of coastal turtle, was brought to the center by the Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

The turtle has two heads, a rare developmental condition known as bicephaly. The Cape Wildlife Center’s veterinary team is closely monitoring its appetite, growth and behavior while learning more about how its two heads and bodies work together.

The center said it has seen only two other cases of bicephaly in the past five years.

For now, the veterinary team will continue monitoring the young turtle as it develops.
