SHREWSBURY, Mass.- A fundraiser has been launched to support Shrewsbury firefighter Mike Penney and his family following surgery that resulted in the amputation of his leg after a sudden and severe illness.

Penney, 36, has been a member of the Shrewsbury Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 4613, for more than six and a half years, according to the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts Foundation.

The foundation said Penney has dedicated his life to helping the public and has consistently supported fellow firefighters and those he loves.

Penney’s wife, Amy, and their three children, ages 1, 5 and 7, are supporting him through his recovery and adjusting to their new circumstances.

Funds raised through the campaign will help support Penney and his family during his ongoing rehabilitation and recovery.

As of September 20, the fundraiser had raised $83,166.59 toward its $100,000 goal.
