WWII-era artillery found at abandoned Groveland home determined to be inert

GROVELAND, Mass.- World War II-era artillery discovered inside an abandoned Groveland residence Monday night was later determined to be inert after authorities responded to investigate reports of unsecured firearms allegedly posted on social media.

According to the Town of Groveland, officers executed a search warrant at the Main Street property at approximately 9 p.m. on May 4, 2026. The warrant was issued after reports that juveniles had allegedly located unsecured firearms inside the residence and shared images online.

During the search, officers located what appeared to be World War II-era artillery inside the building. The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad and the Groveland Fire Department were called to the scene as a precaution.

Authorities later determined the item was inert and posed no danger. The Bomb Squad secured the device without incident.

Officials said no firearms were found at the property despite the initial reports that prompted the investigation.
