How to contact 911 in Massachusetts when you can’t speak

Massachusetts.- Residents who cannot speak during an emergency can use the Silent Call Procedure to seek help through 911, according to a statewide public awareness campaign launched by the Massachusetts State 911 Department.

The campaign graphic instructs people who cannot speak during an emergency to call 911 and then press 1 for police, 2 for fire or 3 for an ambulance.

For residents who cannot make a voice call, Text-to-911 offers another way to contact emergency dispatchers. Users should open their text messaging app, enter “911” in the recipient field, provide their location and the name of their town or city, and describe the emergency. They should remain connected and follow the dispatcher’s instructions.

The department said the initiative could lead to more residents using the Silent Call Procedure or texting emergency dispatchers, while helping callers better understand the information dispatchers need.

Residents are encouraged to share the campaign with family members, neighbors and friends who may benefit from knowing about these options.
