BILLERICA, Mass.- A Billerica police dog is expected to make a full recovery after being struck by a vehicle while helping Lowell police search for a missing person Thursday.

K-9 KC was working with Billerica Officer John Duggan near the intersection of Monadnock Avenue and Staples Street when the incident occurred.

Duggan took KC to MassVet in Woburn for an evaluation and treatment. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with Lowell police, who investigated the crash.

KC received treatment for her injuries and support from Billerica police officers. She is expected to recover at home with Duggan, according to Billerica Police Chief Roy Frost.

“The K-9s in our department are not only a valuable asset to our investigations and to our neighboring departments, but they are also part of the Billerica Police Department family. I am glad KC did not suffer more serious injuries and that she can recover at home with Officer Duggan,” Frost said.

KC is a 1½-year-old black Labrador retriever who joined the Billerica Police Department in 2025. She is trained to track people and graduated from the Connecticut State Police K-9 program in July 2026.

KC was named after Billerica police officer Kenneth Collins, who died in the line of duty on October 7, 1969, according to the Billerica Police Department.
