BRIDGEWATER, Mass.- A man was transported to Boston Medical Center after suffering a leg wound involving a circular saw at a home on South Street in Bridgewater Tuesday afternoon.
The incident was reported at approximately 4:12 p.m. on August 11 after the man fell and injured his leg with the saw. Bridgewater police and fire crews responded to the home.
Police arrived first and worked to control the bleeding using direct pressure, quick-clot gauze and a tourniquet.
Fire paramedics then provided blood and fluid replacement treatment while transporting the man to Boston Medical Center. A Canton Fire Department blood transfusion unit met the ambulance en route and provided additional treatment.
Bridgewater Police Chief Christopher D. Delmonte said the response demonstrated skills practiced during joint police and fire training.
Fire Chief John Schlatz said paramedics used a humeral head intraosseous (IO) line, a procedure they had practiced during training at a cadaver laboratory. He said a trauma surgeon later told the department that the team’s actions were instrumental in preventing what could have been a tragedy.
The incident remains under investigation by the Bridgewater Police Department.
