Despite freezing temperatures on January 8th, around a dozen Shrewsbury teachers gathered downtown at the junction of Main and Grafton streets to protest their lack of a contract.

Sherwood School teacher and Co-President of the Shrewsbury Education Association, Gary Chalmers, mentioned that teacher contracts expired last August after unsuccessful negotiations. The Association has been in mediation since the autumn.

Chalmers emphasized, “We’re simply trying to inform the public. Throughout this process, it’s become apparent that many in the town aren’t aware that we’re working without a contract.”

Teachers have faced increasing workloads with fewer resources and minimal financial compensation over the years, a significant point of contention, according to Chalmers. Nevertheless, he stated that the teachers wouldn’t opt for a strike.
