WALTHAM, Mass.- A Waltham man has been arrested and charged with cyberstalking Katie Miller, a former political advisor and prominent Republican figure, after allegedly contacting her more than 40 times over several weeks.
John Anthony Proia III, 41, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Boston on one count of cyberstalking and arrested Thursday, Oct. 1, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.
The indictment does not name the alleged victim. The indictment does not name the alleged victim. Miller publicly confirmed that she was the victim in a post on X following the indictment.
According to court filings, Proia allegedly contacted Miller at least 40 times between Aug. 3 and Sept. 23 using multiple phone numbers. The communications included calls, text messages and voicemails, some allegedly made late at night.
Prosecutors allege that Proia also sent disturbing messages to phone numbers associated with Miller’s parents, including messages targeting Miller, her husband and their family.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the phone numbers used in the alleged communications were obtained through applications providing free calling and messaging through Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP. According to the charging documents, such applications can allow users to obscure their identities and generate new phone numbers.
“As alleged in the Indictment, the defendant repeatedly and relentlessly targeted the victim, her husband and her family with deeply disturbing communications that profoundly disrupted their lives,” U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley said.
FBI Boston Special Agent in Charge Ted E. Docks said the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested Proia for allegedly engaging in a sustained campaign of harassment intended to frighten Miller and her family.
Miller addressed the case on X, thanking Attorney General Todd Blanche, Foley and the FBI Washington Field Office “for keeping me and my family safe.” She added, “Good to see a Boston grand jury indict this man.”
