SOMERVILLE, Mass.- Three firefighters were injured Thursday morning while battling a three-alarm fire at a vacant house on Park Street in Somerville.
The fire was reported at 6:34 a.m. Sept. 24 at 8-10 Park Street. Fire companies arriving at the scene encountered heavy fire conditions in the basement and all three upper floors of the house, according to the Somerville Fire Department.
The fire eventually burned through the roof, causing it to collapse. As conditions inside the building became too unsafe for firefighters to continue operating, crews were forced to evacuate.
Firefighters used multiple hose lines and aerial ladders to extinguish the fire from outside the building.
Two firefighters suffered serious hand injuries and were transported to a hospital. A third firefighter suffered an ankle injury.
Three alarms were ultimately sounded, bringing mutual aid to the scene from Cambridge, Boston, Chelsea and Medford.
The house had been vacant for some time. The cause of the fire remains undetermined and is under investigation.
