All three suspects in July 4 Cambridge employee shooting now in custody

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- All three individuals charged in connection with the July 4 fatal shooting of 32-year-old Cambridge resident Xavier Bautista are now in custody, Cambridge police said Tuesday.

Bautista was fatally shot in the early morning hours of July 4 near the intersection of Broadway and Norfolk Street. Police received a 911 call shortly before 5:30 a.m. reporting that a person was lying on the ground in the area. Responding officers and emergency personnel found Bautista, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators determined that he had suffered two gunshot wounds.

According to investigators, Bautista had left his home at about 4 a.m. wearing his Cambridge Department of Public Works work attire when he was confronted by multiple masked men. Authorities allege that the men shot Bautista and then fled in a white Dodge Ram pickup truck.

The investigation initially led to the arrest of Rayquon Brown, 29, of Canton. Brown was arrested July 13 and charged with murder, carrying a firearm without a license, being an armed career criminal and conspiring to commit murder. Prosecutors alleged that Brown acted as a lookout and potential backup during the shooting. He was ordered held without bail following his arraignment.

A second suspect, Giovani Arroyo, 22, of Boston, was arrested Sept. 17 and charged with murder and carrying a firearm without a license. Cambridge police said he was also charged with conspiracy. Arroyo pleaded not guilty and was ordered held without bail.

The investigation identified Arroyo through evidence including cellphone and video records, according to prosecutors at his arraignment. Prosecutors also said investigators had identified another individual involved in the killing, although additional information about that person was not initially released.

Cambridge police announced Tuesday that all three individuals charged in connection with Bautista’s death are now in custody, marking the latest development in an investigation that began with the July 4 shooting.

Police said the investigation has remained a priority and thanked detectives, officers, law enforcement partners and members of the community whose cooperation helped bring all three individuals into custody.
