SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- A Springfield police officer and two Massachusetts State Police troopers are being recognized for helping save the life of an adult who became unresponsive at MGM Springfield on August 23.
The incident happened at about 10:15 a.m. on the casino floor. Trooper James Cook immediately began CPR as Springfield Police Officer Denise Matthews arrived to help.
Matthews and Cook used an automated external defibrillator provided by MGM Security. Trooper Justin Mestre also used a breathing device on the person.
After about two minutes, the person began talking and breathing on their own, according to the Springfield Police Department.
Springfield Police Superintendent Lawrence Akers publicly recognized Matthews, Cook and Mestre for their response.
The recognition followed a report from Massachusetts State Police Lieutenant Corey Mackey, who said the quick CPR and teamwork between the three responders helped save a life.
Mackey also praised their care for the person after they regained consciousness while waiting for paramedics.
