ACTON, Mass.-A nearly 2-year-old child died after entering the water at Nara Park in Acton with his grandmother Friday afternoon. The child’s grandmother remains hospitalized.
Acton Police received a 911 call at 1:37 p.m. for a possible drowning at Nara Park, according to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, Acton Police Chief Doug Sturniolo and Acton Fire Chief Anita Arnum.
Acton Police and Fire departments responded, along with first responders from Westford and area emergency medical services.
Preliminary information indicates that a 75-year-old Acton woman was visiting Nara Park with her three grandchildren. Officials said the group was not wearing bathing suits and appeared not to be at the park to swim.
At one point, the youngest child, who was almost 2 years old, entered the water, followed by his grandmother.
The other children called for help. Lifeguards, camp counselors and bystanders immediately responded to the area. Bystanders removed the child and his grandmother from the water, and lifeguards began life-saving efforts and CPR.
The child was transported by medical flight to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he later died.
The grandmother was also transported for medical care and remains hospitalized.
The incident remains under investigation.
