MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass.- Fifteen firearms stolen during a July 25 burglary in Middleborough have been recovered, with some of the weapons found at a home in New York.
According to the Middleborough Police Department, detectives identified James Delano, a convicted felon, as a suspect after reviewing surveillance video, cell phone location data, license plate reader information, privately owned security cameras and conducting interviews.
On July 28, detectives, along with agents and task force officers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), searched Delano’s Middleborough home. They seized ammunition and a cell phone belonging to Delano, police said.
The investigation then led detectives to a home belonging to members of Delano’s family in Cold Brook, New York.
On August 13, ATF agents from Massachusetts and New York searched the Cold Brook home. They found five of the firearms stolen during the Middleborough burglary, along with several rounds of ammunition that had been buried in a wooded area near the home.
ATF agents later conducted additional interviews in the Cold Brook area. Those interviews led to the recovery of another 10 stolen firearms and additional ammunition, according to police.
All 15 firearms stolen during the July 25 burglary have now been recovered.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts has charged Delano with being a felon in possession of ammunition. Delano has been apprehended. Additional charges related to the investigation are still being considered, police said.
The Middleborough Police Department credited its detectives with identifying the suspect, following leads and helping recover the stolen firearms. The department also thanked ATF agents from the Bridgewater and Syracuse offices and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for their assistance.
