COHASSET, Mass.- A delivery driver escaped from his vehicle after it became stuck on railroad tracks in Cohasset early Sunday morning, shortly before an MBTA Commuter Rail train struck the vehicle. No injuries were reported.
The crash occurred at approximately 12:23 a.m. Sunday, August 9, at the North Main Street grade crossing. According to police, the train was traveling toward Scituate on the Greenbush Line when it struck a 2016 Toyota Camry.
The driver, a 33-year-old Mansfield man delivering packages for an online delivery service, apparently made a wrong turn onto the railroad tracks and became stuck, according to the preliminary investigation.
As the train approached, the driver recognized the danger, exited the Camry and moved to safety before the collision. He was not injured. The train came to a stop just short of the Cohasset MBTA station.
Approximately 15 passengers were aboard the train at the time of the crash. No injuries were reported among the passengers or train crew.
The Camry sustained significant damage and was totaled.
North Main Street was closed for more than two hours while Cohasset police and MBTA Transit Police investigated the crash and crews removed the vehicle and debris from the railroad tracks.
Cohasset Police Chief William Quigley said the driver’s decision to leave the vehicle and move away from the tracks was critical, noting that the incident could have been fatal.
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation by the Cohasset Police Department Criminal Investigations Division and MBTA Transit Police.
