CHELSEA, Mass.- A Chelsea Fire Department crew helped deliver a baby girl on the Tobin Bridge this morning, after responding to a call as the mother was giving birth.
The Chelsea City Government reported the incident Monday, August 10, saying firefighters from Engine 4 arrived on the bridge just as the mother delivered the baby.
The crew cleared the newborn’s airway, clamped and cut the umbilical cord, and cared for both the mother and baby until emergency medical services arrived, according to the city.
The delivery marked the second time in less than a month that Engine 4 has assisted with a birth. The city said the crew previously helped with a delivery in the CANA tunnels.
The city congratulated the mother and her baby and thanked the Engine 4 crew for responding to the emergency.
