LEXINGTON, Mass.- A report of a man with a gun at Grace Chapel in Lexington prompted a police response and temporary lockdown Friday afternoon, but officers later determined there was no threat to anyone on the campus.
The incident was reported at approximately 3:20 p.m. on August 7, 2026, at Grace Chapel, 59 Worthen Road. The report described a shirtless man with a gun in the parking lot.
Responding officers quickly established a perimeter and placed the building on lockdown. The campus was hosting several programs, including programs involving children. Officers then conducted a systematic search of the property.
The individual was located a short time later. According to the investigation, he was waiting to pick up his wife, who works at Grace Chapel.
While waiting outside his vehicle because of the heat, the man was polishing a powder horn, a container historically used to store gunpowder and commonly associated with muskets. Police said he is an avid period reenactor.
Security video corroborated his account, according to the police department. The source does not state that officers confirmed he was carrying a firearm.
The police response involved multiple cruisers, the closure of the parking lot and portions of Worthen Road, and the lockdown while officers investigated the report.
The response was particularly significant because numerous programs were taking place at the campus, including programs involving children. Police said the incident could have caused concern among community members and parents.
The Lexington Police Department said there was no threat to anyone in the building or elsewhere on the Grace Chapel campus at the time of the incident.
