Fall River man charged with attempted murder after double stabbing at Somerset motel

SOMERSET, Mass.- A Fall River man is facing attempted murder charges after police said two people were seriously injured in an alleged unprovoked stabbing at a Somerset motel on Aug. 1.

According to the Somerset Police Department, Kyle Barbosa, 42, was arrested following the incident at the Riverview Inn & Suites. Officers responded after receiving a report that a woman had entered the motel lobby with a neck wound.

Police said officers located the injured woman outside the motel room she had been occupying. Inside, they found a man restraining Barbosa on the floor, with a bloody knife nearby. All three individuals were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

Investigators said Barbosa had contacted the victims earlier that day asking if he could stay with them at the motel. The couple agreed and picked him up before returning to their room.

According to police, the attack began while the couple was preparing to leave the motel. Investigators said Barbosa allegedly approached the woman from behind and attempted to cut her throat with a large knife before striking her in the head. Her boyfriend then intervened and was allegedly cut and stabbed multiple times while trying to stop the attack.

Police said the man was eventually able to disarm Barbosa, force him to the ground, and hold him there until officers arrived.

Detectives described the attack as unprovoked following their investigation.

Barbosa remains hospitalized under police guard and will be arraigned after he is discharged, according to authorities.

He is charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury involving a knife. Police said he is being held on $500,000 cash bail.
