HINGHAM, Mass.- A Hingham man was arrested after investigators alleged he fired two gunshots during a road rage incident in the parking lot of the Hingham Public Library, according to police. No one was struck by the gunfire.
The incident occurred on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at approximately 4:22 p.m. in the parking lot of the Hingham Public Library at 66 Leavitt St. Officers responded to reports of shots fired following what police described as an apparent road rage confrontation involving a car and a truck. By the time officers arrived, the truck had left the scene while the car remained in the parking lot.
According to the Hingham Police Department, investigators determined that the male passenger in the car allegedly fired a handgun during the incident. Police said he sustained an apparent injury that was not caused by gunfire and was transported to a hospital. The firearm was seized at the scene. Police said the man holds a license to carry a firearm. The female driver of the car was not injured.
Police said the driver of the truck later contacted investigators and was also uninjured.
According to investigators, the confrontation began several miles away after the driver of the car allegedly threw a napkin from the vehicle. Police said the truck driver followed the car until both vehicles pulled into the library parking lot. The female driver of the car and the male driver of the truck then exited their vehicles and engaged in what police described as a heated verbal argument. Investigators allege the passenger in the car fired two shots from inside the vehicle as the truck driver was walking back toward his truck.
Police arrested Steven A. License, 60, of Hingham, on Friday, July 24, at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, where he was receiving medical treatment.
License is charged with assault to murder, two counts of assault and battery attempt with a firearm, assault with a dangerous weapon (firearm), discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, and disorderly conduct.
