PROVINCETOWN, Mass.- Eight tombstones were damaged in vandalism at Provincetown’s historic Winthrop Street Cemetery, and police are asking for information from anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area.
The incident was reported Tuesday, July 14, at the cemetery, which is Provincetown’s oldest burial site. Officers responding to the location discovered damage to eight tombstones, according to the Provincetown Police Department.
Winthrop Street Cemetery dates back to the early 1700s and is the oldest existing burial ground in Provincetown.
Police have conducted follow-up investigations throughout the week and are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying those responsible for the vandalism. Anyone who saw suspicious activity near the cemetery from Monday night into Tuesday, July 14, or who has information about the damage is asked to contact the Provincetown Police Department.
