North Reading firefighters contain cooking fire in residential building

N. READING, Mass.- A fire at a multi-unit residential building on Main Street in North Reading led to an evacuation Friday evening before being quickly contained to a single unit.

The North Reading Fire Department responded at about 7 p.m. on June 26, 2026, after reports of smoke and fire inside one of the units. Firefighters arrived to visible smoke and confirmed an active fire.

All occupants had evacuated prior to the arrival of emergency crews. The fire was extinguished quickly and did not spread beyond the unit where it originated.

The fire is believed to have started as a cooking-related incident and remained confined to the interior of the unit. Crews stayed on scene to confirm there was no extension to other parts of the building.

Mutual aid from nearby communities assisted with coverage during the response. Officials said the coordinated effort helped prevent further damage.
