NORTHAMPTON, Mass.- A Northampton restaurant owner is being credited with helping save a man who was choking in the city’s downtown area before first responders arrived.
Jeremy Werther, owner of Homestead, stepped in after becoming aware that a man was choking. According to Northampton Fire Rescue, Werther performed abdominal thrusts, commonly known as the Heimlich maneuver, to clear a large piece of food blocking the man’s airway.
The maneuver successfully dislodged the obstruction, allowing the man to breathe normally again.
When Northampton Fire responders arrived, the patient was alert and breathing without difficulty. The patient later declined further medical treatment.
The incident occurred on the evening of June 4, when emergency crews were dispatched to a reported choking emergency downtown.
Fire officials said Werther’s quick thinking and willingness to act helped prevent what could have been a tragic outcome.
