WINTRHOP, Mass.- A suspected electric vehicle (EV) fire spread to two homes on River Road in Winthrop on June 7, 2026, damaging both buildings and displacing residents.
Fire crews were called around 4:30 p.m. to 157 River Road for a reported house fire. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy flames spreading through more than one home. The fire was quickly upgraded as it intensified, eventually reaching a four-alarm response that brought in additional fire departments from across the region.
The Winthrop Fire Department received mutual aid from departments in Boston, Chelsea, Revere, Saugus, Lynn, Somerville, Malden, Medford, Everett, and Massport.
Fire officials said that, based on early findings, an electric vehicle (EV) parked between the two homes may have caught fire first. The flames then spread from the vehicle to both houses.
Firefighters remained on scene for several hours, working to bring the fire under control and secure the area. Crews cleared the scene and returned to service around 8:15 p.m.
Because of the extended response, firefighters were provided food, water, and rest areas on site, including hydration drinks, snacks, and other supplies.
According to WHDH 7 News Boston, two people were taken to the hospital, including Chiara Keenan, who was in labor during the fire. The report states that Keenan and her husband, Sean Keenan, later said their daughter, Giannina Grace Keenan, was born at Winchester Hospital on Monday morning, and both mother and baby are doing well.
Officials have not released additional details on the cause of the fire, and the investigation is ongoing.
