LYNNFIELD, Mass.- Firefighters evacuated a burning Lynnfield home moments before part of the structure collapsed during a four-alarm fire Thursday, officials said.
Emergency crews responded May 21 to a home on Melody Lane in Lynnfield for a reported gas leak with smoke showing. Firefighters later discovered a basement fire that spread to the first floor, prompting a second alarm response.
Officials said crews inside the home reported unstable flooring and were ordered to evacuate the building. A partial collapse of the first floor into the basement occurred within minutes of the evacuation order.
According to the Lynnfield Fire Department, the incident later escalated to a third and then fourth alarm as crews worked to contain the fire and secure the area.
Mutual aid departments from several North Shore and Greater Boston communities responded to assist during the operation.
One Lynnfield firefighter was transported to Lahey Hospital & Medical Center with injuries and was later released.
Officials said the collapse created difficult-to-access pockets of fire in the basement. Firefighters returned to the property the following day for a rekindle.
The home was later declared structurally unsafe and demolished by order of the town building commissioner.
