Thousands affected by second power outage in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Mass.- Thousands of residents and businesses in Lawrence were affected by a second reported power outage in less than three days after another outage struck the city’s South Lawrence neighborhood Tuesday.

City officials said the May 19 outage affected multiple residents, businesses, and traffic signals in South Lawrence. National Grid was notified and crews were dispatched to restore power, with an estimated restoration time of about two hours.

A Spanish-language notice shared by the city stated that approximately 3,800 customers were affected.

Officials also warned that several traffic lights were out and urged drivers to treat affected intersections as four-way stops.

The latest outage came after a May 17 power outage that city officials said affected an estimated 3,744 customers across several streets, including Broadway, Beacon Street, Inman Street, Mount Vernon Street, Beacon Avenue, Easton Street, Diamond Street, Brookfield Street, and Dracut Street.

According to Lawrence Police Department, a fire was reported at an electrical substation in the South Lawrence area during the May 17 outage. Authorities said the incident caused disruptions to residents, businesses, and traffic signals.

No cause for the May 19 outage was immediately released.
