FRAMINGHAM, Mass.- A small fire at a recycling facility in Framingham on Tuesday was traced to a grill with an electric igniter and live batteries that entered the recycling system, officials said.
The fire occurred May 12, 2026, at Framingham Recycling on Morton Street. According to the Framingham Fire Department, firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and no injuries were reported.
Michael Dutcher said the fire was caused by a grill equipped with an electric igniter that had been improperly discarded with batteries still inside.
Officials said the igniter continued clicking while moving through a debris pile at the facility, eventually igniting flammable liquid or gas sources present in the recyclable materials being processed.
Fire officials said the incident highlights the dangers posed by improperly discarded household items, particularly grills, batteries, and other hazardous materials that can ignite during waste and recycling operations.
