MILLBURY, Mass.- A large black bear spotted roaming through a residential neighborhood in Millbury on Friday prompted multiple calls to local authorities, though officials said the animal was not causing any immediate problems.
According to the Millbury Police Department, officers received several reports on May 8 about a black bear seen near homes in town. One officer photographed the bear on Pineland Avenue during the day.
The photo released by police appears to show the large bear walking through a backyard area near a shed and surrounding vegetation in the neighborhood.
Officials advised residents not to approach the animal and urged them to keep pets secured and supervised, adding that the bear should be given ample space if encountered.
Authorities said the bear did not appear aggressive and would likely move along on its own. Residents were asked to contact police if the bear becomes injured, aggressive, or poses an immediate danger to the public.
Black bear sightings have become increasingly common in parts of Massachusetts in recent years, particularly during warmer months when bears travel in search of food or new territory.
