Communities along the Boston Marathon route will see widespread road closures on April 20 as the race travels from Hopkinton to Boston’s Copley Square.
Closures begin early in Hopkinton, where streets near the start area are shut down in advance of the race. From there, restrictions move eastward in sequence as runners pass through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Wellesley, Newton, Brookline, and into Boston.
In the MetroWest section, Route 135 is among the primary affected corridors. Natick is expected to see a full closure from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. as runners pass through its roughly four-mile segment of the course between mile markers 7.5 and 11.7.
Further along the route, Wellesley will see extended mid-day restrictions, particularly around Route 135 and the town center area. Newton will experience some of the longest closures of the day due to the Newton Hills section, with impacts extending into the afternoon.
Brookline and Boston will remain affected later in the day as the race approaches its final stretch into Copley Square, where finish-line operations extend roadway restrictions into the evening.
Officials emphasize that closures are rolling and dependent on runner progression, with each community reopening roads only after the course has cleared. Motorists are advised to expect delays, avoid crossing the route, and plan alternate travel throughout the day.
