Pennsylvania man charged after attempted bank fraud in Hopkinton and Southborough

A Pennsylvania man is facing multiple charges after police say he attempted fraudulent transactions at banks in Hopkinton and Southborough within minutes of each other.

According to the Hopkinton Police Department and the Southborough Police Department, officers responded on Wednesday, March 11, at about 3:12 p.m. to a bank at 10 Main St. in Hopkinton for a report that a man was attempting to impersonate another individual.

Police said the man, identified as Edward Heinzman, 60, of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, attempted to withdraw $2,800 from a bank account using a driver’s license issued in another person’s name. The license number corresponded to a real individual with the same name and date of birth but a different address and physical description.

During the investigation, bank employees reported a similar incident minutes earlier at the bank’s Southborough branch.

At about 3:17 p.m., Southborough police responded to a bank at 162 Cordaville Road for a report of attempted check fraud that had occurred at about 2:52 p.m. Officers said a man attempted to cash a check for $2,147.53 and presented a license that a clerk determined appeared fraudulent.

Police also learned Heinzman had an active extraditable warrant from Pennsylvania for a parole violation.

Hopkinton police arrested Heinzman and charged him with forging or misusing an RMV signature, furnishing a false ID to law enforcement, possession or use of a false or stolen RMV document, intimidation of a witness, juror, police officer, or court official, and fugitive from justice on a court warrant.

Police in Southborough later obtained a warrant in Westborough District Court charging Heinzman with forging or misusing an RMV signature, identity fraud, forgery of a check, uttering a false check, and attempt to commit a crime (larceny over $1,200).

The charges are allegations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
