Authorities say a 25-year-old Milford man was taken into custody Saturday after allegedly throwing a dog from a second-story balcony at the Oak Ridge Apartments on Pheasant Circle.
According to the Milford Police Department, the incident was reported around 2:39 a.m. when the Public Safety Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a disturbance and a possible animal being thrown from a balcony. Responding officers found a small gray dog severely injured and partially buried in a snowbank beneath the apartment. Emergency personnel arranged immediate medical treatment for the animal.
Police say additional officers entered the apartment and found Alex De Oliveira hiding in the bathroom. Officers reported that De Oliveira appeared upset and intoxicated. The apartment showed signs of significant damage. Investigators indicated that De Oliveira had been alone in the residence and became upset during a phone call with a person in Brazil.
“This is a senseless, inexcusable attack on a defenseless animal,” Milford Police Chief Robert Tusino said in a statement. “The depravity of some individuals is beyond comprehension to those of us who consider animals part of our family.”
The dog was transported to Tufts Animal Hospital in Grafton for treatment.
De Oliveira was arrested at 3:31 a.m. on charges of cruelty to an animal, disturbing the peace, and vandalizing property. He was later released on $5,000 bail.
