Central Massachusetts is preparing for a major winter storm expected to begin Sunday afternoon and continue into Monday night. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning effective 4 p.m. Sunday through 7 a.m. Tuesday, covering Worcester, Fitchburg, Leominster, and surrounding areas.
Forecasters say the storm, part of a larger nor’easter affecting the Northeast, could bring 10 to 20 inches of snow, with higher localized totals possible. Snowfall rates may exceed 1–2 inches per hour at the height of the storm, and wind gusts could reach 40–50 mph, causing blowing snow and reduced visibility.
Local authorities have declared winter weather emergencies, including parking bans, and are urging residents to avoid travel during the storm. Roads are expected to become snow-covered and slick, and scattered power outages are possible as heavy snow combines with strong winds.
Schools, municipal offices, and some public services may close or operate on limited schedules. Emergency management officials are advising residents to charge devices, secure outdoor items, and prepare emergency supplies.
The storm is expected to peak Monday morning through midday, coinciding with typical peak travel periods. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local authorities as conditions could change rapidly.
This nor’easter is part of a broader system affecting much of the Northeast, with blizzard warnings issued from Delaware to Massachusetts. The storm is expected to have significant impacts on travel, utilities, and daily life across the region.
