Shrewsbury will host A Revolution of Her Own!™, an immersive performance depicting the life of Deborah Sampson, recognized as one of the first professional female soldiers in American history. The event, organized by History At Play™, LLC and sponsored by the Shrewsbury Historical Society, tells Sampson’s story through interactive storytelling, period clothing, and simulated combat scenes. Viewer discretion is advised due to depictions of violence; the performance is rated PG.
Deborah Sampson was born in 1760 in Massachusetts and became an indentured servant at a young age. Determined to serve her country despite gender restrictions, she disguised herself as a man and enlisted in the Continental Army, serving for approximately 18 months. She participated in multiple battles, sustained injuries, and was honorably discharged, later receiving a military pension. Sampson’s life story reflects the barriers women faced during the Revolutionary era and her efforts to challenge societal norms.
The production features History At Play™ Founder and Artistic Director Judith Kalaora in a solo portrayal of Sampson, tracing her life from indentured servant to revolutionary soldier, including her active service in the American Revolutionary War and her eventual discharge. Post-show, attendees have the opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer session.
Since its debut, A Revolution of Her Own! has been staged in numerous venues across the United States and online, and has received coverage from outlets including The New York Times, WCVB Channel 5, CBS WBZ Radio, and the Associated Press.
The performance will take place on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at 7:00 PM, First Congregational Church, Gifford Hall, 19 Church Road, Shrewsbury, MA. Admission is free.
