A widespread power outage affected multiple areas of Shrewsbury late Monday night, leaving some residents without electricity for several hours as temperatures dropped into the teens.
The outage began around 11 p.m. Monday. Affected areas included the Edgemere neighborhood, South Quinsigamond Avenue, sections of Route 20 near the Westborough line, and portions of Route 9 near South Street, and more.
At approximately midnight, the Shrewsbury Police Department reported a large outage impacting the southeast side of town. Police said Shrewsbury Electric and Cable Operations (SELCO) was aware of the issue and responding, though no estimated restoration time was initially provided. Police also noted they were receiving numerous calls related to the outage.
Power was restored to some parts of town around 1 a.m. Shortly afterward, at 1:10 a.m., SELCO issued an update stating that a fault at one of its substations was responsible for the major outage. SELCO said crews were on site and working to restore service as quickly and safely as possible, and thanked residents for their patience.
Earlier in the evening, around 9:30 p.m., Hudson Light and Power reported outages in Hudson, Mass., with estimated restoration times of three to four hours. It remained unclear whether the Hudson and Shrewsbury outages were related.
As of 7:50 a.m. Tuesday, officials had not released additional details regarding the cause of the substation fault. The temperature in Shrewsbury during the outage was approximately 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

Would like to know what happened to cause the outage. Seems odd that there was such a widespread outage and no explanation provided for it. Needs further reporting.
