In what had become a tradition in Shrewsbury, the town will once again allow residents to dispose of one free non–Pay-As-You-Throw trash bag in the days following Christmas.
On December 17, 2025, the Select Board authorized the disposal of one non-PAYT trash bag per household for the period of December 29 through January 3. The temporary measure applies to households participating in the town’s Pay-As-You-Throw program.
During the authorized period, residents may place one plastic non-PAYT trash bag, up to 35 gallons in size, at the curb on their regularly scheduled collection day. Town officials said the program is intended to help manage the increase in holiday-related waste that cannot be recycled.
Items such as wrapping paper and Styrofoam often accumulate after the Christmas holiday and are not accepted in recycling bins. When placed in recycling, these materials can contaminate recycling streams and increase processing costs.
