Two small dogs have been killed by coyotes within the past week in Norfolk County, prompting police and animal control officials to urge residents to take extra care when letting pets outside.
According to Wrentham Police Chief Bill McGrath, the incidents involved dogs that were left in yards unattended during the night or early morning hours, when coyotes are most active. One attack occurred near Thurston Street, close to the Foxboro line. In a separate incident early Wednesday morning, a dog reported missing from the Deer Run Road area around 4:30 a.m. was later found with injuries consistent with a coyote encounter and did not survive.
Animal control officials in Wrentham said there is no immediate threat to public safety but strongly encouraged residents to take precautions, particularly during early morning and evening hours. Officials advised residents not to leave pets unattended outside, even in fenced yards, and to remain aware of wildlife activity.
McGrath emphasized the importance of supervision when pets are outdoors. “Do not let dogs out unattended,” he said.
The incidents occurred in Wrentham and serve as a reminder that coyotes remain active in many suburban and semi-rural communities across Massachusetts.
