The Worcester Police Department has issued a warning regarding a series of motor vehicle thefts that have predominantly involved Hyundai and Kia vehicles. The thefts are attributed to a vulnerability present in certain models, which allows them to bypass the ignition system and steal the vehicles.
In most reported cases, suspects gain entry into the vehicles by either entering unlocked cars or breaking windows. Once inside, they tamper with the steering column and ignition system in an attempt to start the vehicle. Although many of these attempts do not result in successful thefts, they often lead to significant damage to the vehicles involved.
Since July, there have been ten reported thefts, with eight of these incidents involving Kia vehicles and two involving Hyundai vehicles. The timing of these thefts varies, but several incidents are believed to have occurred overnight or in the early morning hours. Initially, the thefts were spread across the city, however, a recent cluster has been identified in the vicinity of Main Street and Elm Street in Worcester.
In response to the rising number of thefts, the Worcester Police Department has provided several recommendations for vehicle owners to enhance their security. Residents are advised to contact their local dealership to check if their vehicle is eligible for a software update or retrofit kit that may address the security vulnerability. Additionally, the use of a steering wheel lock is recommended for added security.
Other suggested measures include parking in well-lit areas to reduce the risk of theft, installing a battery disconnect switch to prevent unauthorized ignition, and installing a kill switch to disable the ignition system. Vehicle owners are also encouraged to ensure that all doors are locked and windows are closed to secure their vehicles. Installing a GPS tracking device for location monitoring is another recommended precaution.
Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity to their local police department to assist in addressing this issue effectively.
