The victim of yesterday’s fatal shooting incident in Shrewsbury has been identified as Kevin Doherty, 56. The incident occurred on Thursday morning after Doherty dropped his 6-year-old child off at school. Prosecutors revealed the details during a court session in Westborough District Court on Friday.
According to Shrewsbury Police Chief Kevin Anderson, police received a 911 call from Doherty shortly before 8:50 a.m. on Thursday, reporting an altercation near Jordan Pond. During the call, Doherty confronted Snehal Ansh Srivastava, 26, who was allegedly spray-painting near the pond. Following a brief exchange, Doherty took a photograph of Srivastava, which led to a physical confrontation between the two men.
While police were en route to the scene, the dispatcher, who remained on the line with Doherty, reported hearing gunshots. After the gunfire, Doherty ceased communication with the dispatcher. Upon arrival, officers found Doherty suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shooting, Srivastava fled the scene, prompting a large-scale search operation involving local police departments from Auburn, Boylston, Grafton, Northborough, Westborough, and Massachusetts State Police. Authorities utilized drones to locate Srivastava, who was found inside a nearby residence.
Srivastava eventually surrendered to law enforcement after engaging in communication with the State Police Tactical Operations Team. He exited a home located at 29 Edgewater Avenue in Shrewsbury, which was noted to have various spray-painted slogans, including “Ganga Gardens,” “Free Palestine,” “Free Congo,” and “BLM.”
Police later executed a search warrant at the residence as part of the ongoing investigation.
