A 56-year-old man, Kevin Doherty, died following a shooting near Jordan Pond in Shrewsbury on the morning of Thursday, August 28. Authorities confirmed that the incident was not connected to any schools. A suspect, 26-year-old Snehal Srivastava, is currently in custody.
Shrewsbury police first responded to reports around 9:00 a.m., prompting temporary security measures at nearby schools, including Calvin Coolidge Elementary, which was secured as a precaution.
Shrewsbury Public Schools Superintendent Joe Sawyer confirmed that all students and staff were safe and that the campus had been secured solely due to the nearby incident.
Authorities maintained a large law enforcement presence in the Jordan Pond, Edgewater Avenue, and Plainfield Avenue area as they searched for the armed suspect. Residents were initially advised to avoid the neighborhood and shelter in place. The order was lifted at 12:54 p.m., with the suspect in custody and no ongoing threat to the community.
Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. said the shooting followed an argument. The victim had called police, and while speaking with dispatchers, gunshots were heard. Officers arriving on the scene found the man on the ground; he later died from his injuries.
Early added that shortly before the shooting, the victim had walked a child to school. On his way home, he encountered a man with spray paint along the path and took a photo of him prior to the shooting.
