A man driving a U-Haul truck fled from police and crashed after being approached by law enforcement officers in the early morning hours of April 4, 2025. The incident began when officers from the Shrewsbury Police Department observed the U-Haul parked in the CVS Pharmacy parking lot on Route 9 (197 Boston Turnpike). The driver’s door was open, and the operator appeared slumped over in the driver’s seat, with the vehicle still running.
According to the law enforcement agency, when an officer approached the vehicle to check on the individual, signs of impairment were immediately apparent. Within moments, the operator placed the vehicle in drive and sped off, nearly striking the officer. A pursuit was initiated as the U-Haul continued northbound on Harrington Avenue. Officers requested backup as the vehicle fled at high speed. Shortly thereafter, the U-Haul crashed into a rock wall and guardrail at the corner of Old Mill Road and Harrington Avenue.
Upon the crash, the operator exited the vehicle but resisted arrest, becoming combative with officers. Additional units arrived to assist, and the individual was eventually subdued and taken into custody.
A subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered numerous items believed to be stolen, including video game consoles, laptops, tires, a lawnmower, and several new clothing items.
The operator was identified as 59-year-old Edward Alexander of Boston, Massachusetts. He was found to have multiple outstanding warrants, including four from Massachusetts and one from New Hampshire. In addition to the warrants, Alexander was charged with receiving stolen property valued over $1,200, assault with a dangerous weapon (the U-Haul truck), assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, operating under the influence of drugs, malicious destruction of property over $1,200, fugitive from justice on a court warrant, failure to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop or yield, marked lanes violation, and motor vehicle equipment violation.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:59 a.m. and involved the coordinated efforts of officers from the Shrewsbury Police Department.
