A U-Haul truck fleeing police crashed into a utility pole near the Target store on Route 9 in Westborough on the evening of November 12.
Initially reported by the Westborough Fire Department as an accident involving a downed pole with live wires and three injuries, further details have since emerged linking the crash to a police chase that began in Shrewsbury.
According to Shrewsbury Police, the incident started around 8:42 PM when an officer spotted the U-Haul in the parking lot of a CVS pharmacy on Route 9. The truck had been involved in a police chase with the Massachusetts State Police the previous night. When the officer attempted to stop the truck, the driver sped off, leading police on a chase through several streets in Shrewsbury before heading east on Route 9 toward Westborough.
During the pursuit, unsecured items spilled from the truck’s rear door onto the road. Police used tire-deflation devices near the Northborough town line, successfully puncturing the truck’s tires. Despite the damage, the driver continued before crashing into a utility pole near Target. The crash brought down power lines.
Firefighters and police responded to the scene, with firefighters transporting three injured individuals to a nearby hospital. The truck, which was heavily damaged in the crash, was later identified as carrying suspected stolen property.
Police arrested the driver, Stephen Dupont, 47, of Millbury, at the scene. Two women who were passengers in the truck were also detained. Dupont now faces several charges, including reckless driving, fleeing police, and possession of stolen goods. The two passengers will face charges in court for their alleged role in the suspected theft.
