Worcester County residents have been alerted to a recent increase in scam calls, where individuals are pretending to be representatives of the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office. These fraudulent callers may falsely claim to have legal documents for the recipient, using this ruse to extract sensitive information or create fear. In some cases, the caller ID is manipulated to display the genuine number of the Sheriff’s Office, making the scam seem more legitimate.
In a statement from the Shrewsbury Police, residents are strongly advised not to engage with these callers. Instead, they should inform the caller that they will independently verify the number and then contact the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office directly.
The Sheriff’s Department has affirmed that official legal documents are never served over the phone. Such communications are either delivered in person or sent through the U.S. Mail.
”As always, if something feels suspicious, trust your instincts. Hang up immediately and contact the Shrewsbury Police Department for assistance,” said the local agency.
