The Worcester County District Attorney, Joseph D. Early, Jr., recently announced receiving a $100,000 state grant to combat gang-related crime. A part of this grant will directly aid programs at the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester, supporting at-risk youth.
“The key mission of our office is to prevent crime,” said Mr. Early. “Gangs are one of the main drivers of violence and drugs in our communities. We want to support our at-risk youth, preventing their introduction to gang life and the inevitability of ending up in the criminal justice system. By supporting these kids, we can prevent crime, keep the numbers down in the jails, and guide our youth to brighter, happier futures.”
The grant, awarded through the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security’s (EOPSS) Project Safe Neighborhood Program, aids in prosecuting gang crimes.
A segment of the grant is allocated for prevention and intervention programs through community organizations, with the Boys & Girls Club being a recent partner. Last year, thanks to this funding, the club provided programs to 250 kids, including gender-specific initiatives like Passport to Manhood and S.M.A.R.T Girls, benefiting 122 boys and 128 girls, respectively.
