Shrewsbury firefighters were conducting a training session on Jordan Pond on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, to practice using their rescue hovercraft. However, they unexpectedly had to put their training into action when a snowmobiler broke through the ice.

According to reports from regional news sources, what began as an emergency training exercise turned into a real-life rescue when the snowmobiler’s vehicle plunged into the icy water.

Worcester Telegram and Gazette reporter Craig S. Semon was among the first to report on the incident, with photographer Allan Jung capturing the unfolding events.

As quoted in the reports, Fire Capt. Sean Lawlor and Lt. Mike Boroweic provided insights into the situation. According to Lawlor, the snowmobiler involved in the incident was unharmed but has remained unidentified. Lawlor told the Telegram, “He got checked by the medics on the scene. They checked him out. He’s all set. He was clear to go back to his home.”

The report also mentions that the Fire Department had to extract the snowmobile from the pond. Lawlor mentioned, “ [i]f there are any types of leaks or anything like that, he would have to cover the cost, but we haven’t seen anything.”
