In photos: Shrewsbury shows up to honor those who gave all to preserve our freedom

After two long years of virtual-only celebrations, the Shrewsbury community returned to the street to honor all the Americans who lost their lives defending and preserving our freedom.

On the 2022 Shrewsbury Memorial Day Parade, held on Monday, May 30, different community groups formed at Town Hall, then marched through Maple Avenue, stopping at the Town Commons, and then ended at Mountain View Cemetery.

The parade formation included the Shrewsbury Police Department, the Shrewsbury Fire Department, Staff and Local & State Officials, Shrewsbury High School Band, the Charles J. Murphy Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #10278, the Ray Stone American Legion Post #238, Victor R. Quaranta American Legion Post #397, Visiting Veterans Groups, Active Military Personnel & Persian Gulf Veterans, Parents and Friends of Active Military Personnel, Veterans Inc, Veterans Vehicles, the Shrewsbury BSA- Girl Troop 7114, Shrewsbury Boy Scouts Troops, Shrewsbury Girl Scouts Troops, the Shrewsbury Sweethearts, and the Shrewsbury Oak Middle School 8th Grade Band.

At 9:20 a.m., at the Soldier’s Statue in front by Town Hall, the parade’s opening remarks were delivered by Selectman Maurice DePalo and State Representative Hannah Kane.

At 9:30 groups started marching. Around 10:00 a.m., at the War Memorial by the Town Commons, Master of Ceremonies John Travers welcomed the attendees; remarks by Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito followed, and then Shuling Lin, from Shrewsbury High, Speech & Debate Team offered the Gettysburg Address.

Following, Gold Star Mother Tracy Racine offered a heartfelt 2022 Memorial Address.

After the Pledge of Alliance and the Wreath Ceremony and Salute, the parade continued to the Veteran’s lot in Mountain View Cemetery to conduct services for Veterans of All Wars.
